This unique publication is designed to be a fun play-along book for students who want to enjoy soloing freely, instead of having to cope with too many scale changes. With interesting heads, and long open sections, the tunes encourage creativity over the inspiring contemporary material. Free to Solo is suitable for intermediate students seeking a challenge as well as more advanced players requiring additional material to explore.

On the included CD there are 'minus one' tracks to play along with as well as complete performance versions of all the instruments in the series (Alto / Tenor sax, Flute / Violin, Clarinet, Trumpet, Guitar and Trombone), so that the reader can draw upon different interpretations of the improvised material.

Contained in each book:

Style & History
This section will discuss the background and features of various genres, together with suggested listening. Styles covered include funk, folk, Mowtown, jazz, pop, reggae, ballads and Latin.

Rhythm
This section deals with how to play tricky rhythms as well as ideas about developing a solo from a rhythmic point-of-view.

Harmony
The idea is to solo freely whilst listening to the harmony on the audio tracks provided, without being constrained by too much jazz theory. The majority of the pieces have been designed to work with single pentatonic or major scale. Chord symbols are included throughout for more advanced players.

Tips & Projects
Here you are invited to take your study a little further. This will involve transcribing parts of the demonstrated solo, writing an alternative melody, more advanced harmonic ideas and guidance on solo structures.
