'Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom' is based on the late South African President Nelson Mandela's autobiography of the same name, which chronicles his early life, coming of age, education and 27 years in prison before becoming President and working to rebuild the country's once segregated society. Idris Elba (Prometheus) stars as Nelson Mandela, Naomie Harris (Skyfall) stars as Winnie Mandela, with Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl) directing. The film had its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. The emotive score was composed by the award winning Alex Heffes and accompanies the sweeping cinematography, perfectly capturing both the majesty and violence of Africa. It features a collaboration with South African legend Caiphus Semenya. Heffes' subtle use of both classical and African instruments gives the film its emotional resonance and compliments the film's feeling of watching history unfold in front of your eyes. Following Mandela's death on 5 December 2013, the film has gained additional significance as a memorial to the man described by Morgan Freeman, who played the South African leader in Clint Eastwood's Oscar-nominated 2009 film 'Invictus', as 'one of the true giants of the past century. Nelson Mandela was a man of incomparable honor, unconquerable strength, and unyielding resolve - a saint to many, a hero to all who treasure liberty, freedom and the dignity of humankind.
