In Sweet day, so cool, Howard Helvey has created a beautiful musical landscape for the Welsh-born poet (and Anglican priest) George Herbert's tender poem 'Virtue'. Each verse begins with a modal-sounding unison figure which flowers into expressive harmonies built on highly-chromatic vocal lines. Regular time signature changes facilitate a declamatory style of text setting in this artfully-crafted evocation of Herbert's text.
