This innovative piece was completed in 1934 as part of the music for the film Night of St. Petersburg and features lyrical, almost folk-like violin melodies. Dmitri Kabalevsky was one of the most important of 20th-century Russian composers, very much at home with traditional musical forms and music for education. Improvisation Op.21 No.1 is a stunning chamber work for Violin and Piano.
