There are very few pieces in the Nikolai Kapustin oeuvre like this Sonatina intentionally written as an easy piece. Kapustin was approached by a music school for children and asked to to write something "not too difficult", and although he at first declined he changed his mind and turned towards writing something "easy"; his Sonatina for piano, Op100 was composed in 2000.
