Mozart's Requiem K.626 is acknowledged as one of his greatest achievements, the composition of which remains shrouded in myth and legend. Was the work the composer's response to a premonition of his own death, or did it begin as a commission from a mysterious stranger on behalf of Count Franz von Walsegg-Stuppach who wished to pass the work off as his own? Regardless of its origins, Mozart's Requiem is regarded as one of the most significant compositions ever put to paper. The piece was completed post-mortem by Franz Xavier Sussmayr, a student of Mozart, and it is from his version that this urtext edition has been produced.
