Birdsong is a celebration of life. The text comes from a collection of poems written by children who, while incarcerated in the Terezin Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia during the Second World War, wrote of their experiences and their dreams. The text's positive and uplifting message is all the more striking when placed against the backdrop of war and the loss of personal freedom.

The melody, harmonies and rhythms in Birdsong are intended to support the optimistic nature of the text. The melody is simple and clear; the harmonies slightly darker with jazz overtones; the rhythms gentle but suggesting dance and celebration. For treble voices in two parts (SA).

Reviews

"Good for choirs making the transition from beginner to intermediate level - a lyrical setting of life-affirming words written by an unknown child incarcerated in the Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, with a relatively simply lower part"
Music Teacher 2001

"I think that Birdsong has captured the hearts of my middle-school choir. We will be performing the song on Tusday, and tonight I am doing reacherch on it, to present to my peers. This has been a perfect song for this 7th grade choir. You'll enjoy it very much!"

"This piece is absolutely wonderful. Especially because it is poems written by children in Concentration Camps and they are just happy to be alive! It is wonderful!"
