"To start, this piece may also be done with clarinet, horn and piano. This is how I performed with my chamber ensemble at recital. A note to this piece before I begin, in the printing that we used there was some sort of error in the first movement towards the end where some of the viola part had been omitted when it was transferred over to the horn part. Under further scrutiny, we discovered that the horn has a different part in that section so we gave the phantom viola part to the clarinet who was resting at the time. It worked out well.
This piece is pretty much the biggest work for clarinet, horn and piano currently. It is a very serious undertaking although I wouldn't approach it too seriously. :) There are many many enjoyable nuances in the work that are delightful. The second movement is probably my favorite as it is entitled "A Tale" or something to that effect. We managed to discover a Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale that went a long with it and actually had actors do silent acting to the music as we played. It was a big hit. :)
The third movement just seems like it couldn't ever go fast enough. We cut some of the repeats initially but taken fast enough it is prudent to take all repeats. Very lively movement.
The finaly movement was daunting for us as this was the first piece we tackled as an ensemble. The rhythms defy the meter quite frequently making it very challenging to count one's way through the piece.
Overall, this is a really fun piece to do. I wouldn't mind the opportunity to play it again. We spent a year working it up and it went well but like any piece you can listen to a recording and realize how much more could be done with it."
