The musical is a fictionalized account of the life of the Trapp Family Singers and their escape from Austria after the Nazi Anschluss in 1938. It opened at Broadways Lunt-Fontanne theater on November 16, 1959 and ran for 1,443 performances. The following year, it won the Tony for Best Musical.
