With Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, one of the pillars of Breitkopf & Härtel’s catalogue has undergone a full scholarly revision, from "head to toe”, as it were. The unusual solo instrument no doubt drew additional interest to the work when it was first published; the arpeggione was replaced by a violin (!) and violoncello in its first edition of 1871. Franz Beyer meticulously examined the sources for this new edition, which is now divided into two separate publications.
