Reviews
‘...a real gem. It is, as it says on the box, the ‘definitive account’ of one of the 20th century’s greatest musicians. ...a demonstration-class package.’
Songlines

‘...two seductive performances...the film is gorgeous, full of beautifully-composed imagery...’
The Gramophone

‘On his recent UK tour, Ravi Shankar demonstrated that he is still a musical miracle worker, a virtuoso whose sitar playing sounds like an ecstatic communion between man and God. This DVD provides acres of spiritual entertainment which you can dip into.
Disc two features a complete performance by Shankar and his daughter Anoushka (London’s Union Chapel, 2002) and disc one contains a footage-laden documentary on the great man’s life. And what a life it is - by the time he was 14, Shankar was already rubbing shoulders with Hollywood’s rich and famous when he toured the US as part of an Indian dance troupe. Then came years of solitude as he struggled to master the sitar, after which the roller-coaster ride began. Shankar’s friendship with George Harrison propelled him to superstar status in the late 60’s, but he had already formed strong bonds with such musical luminaries as John Coltrane and Yehudi Menuhin.
The story is told by Shankar himself, against a bewitching backdrop of Indian scenery. An engaging speaker with a bottomless barrel of wisdom, he seems that most precious of commodities - a musical genius who is also a thoroughly lovely man.’
The Guardian

‘This is a superb production and should be in the collections of anyone in the least bit interested in Indian classical music. The BBC has given us a pair of discs, the first being a documentary of Shankar’s life and performing history and the second gives us a live recital in a very appropriate setting… Both audio and video quality are superb, and the BBC should be congratulated for this release’.

'There aren’t many musicians who can claim to have changed the course of 20th-century music. Nor many who played with as diverse a group of people as Yehudi Menuhin, The Beatles, saxophonist John Coltrane and composer Philip Glass. Sitar player Ravi Shankar can. And he can boast an Oscar (for the soundtrack to Attenborough’s epic Ghandi). This touching, stimulating release is a portrait of a musician of boundless imagination. There’s a revealing interview with Shankar, a fascinating intro to Indian music and a concert with daughter Anoushka filmed in London last year. Astonishing.'
