Howard Griffiths and the NDR Radio Philharmonic start on their exploration of Louis Spohr’s symphonic works, with Symphonies Nos. 3 and 10. The widespread interest in Louis Spohr is growing and CPO’s series of the symphonic works aim to bring to light one of the most popular German composers in England from the nineteenth century.

Spohr wrote nine symphonies leaving the tenth unfinished. The later symphonies move from the classical style that he had inherited to music with a programmatic element. They remain relative rarities in the concert-hall today. Howard Griffiths once again presents a gripping interpretation informed by historical performance practice.

The 'Symphony No. 10' here receives its world première recording. Howard Griffiths is now beginning a complete recording of Spohr's symphonies with the NDR Radio Philharmonic on the basis of a new edition of the scores. During the first half of the nineteenth century Louis Spohr gained more notice and recognition than any other composer besides Beethoven. After Beethoven's death in March 1827, Spohr was even regarded as the greatest living composer among large segments of the European public interested in music.
