Clarinet Classics Various CD
The English Romantics
World Premiere Recordings by Lloyd, Howells & Hurlstone
Victoria Soames Samek - clarinet Laurence Perkins - bassoon John Flinders - piano
Clarinet Classics is proud to present an important and fascinating collection of chamber works from the turn of the century.
The career of Hurlstone, who was plagued by ill-health, was cut short when he died at the early age of 30. As his music is being published and re-discovered, it is becoming clear that Hurlstone, had he lived, would have become one of the major English composers of the 20th century.
Although relatively unfamiliar, the three Premiere Recordings are of works which thoroughly deserve a place in the chamber repertoire and on the CD market. By turn s tuneful and charming, exciting and passionate, this music comes from a time when English music was re-discovering itself after the relative quiet of the Victorian Era.
"Victoria Soames and her colleagues should be commended for their assiduous scholarship and research in bringing this hitherto obscure music, some of which is still unpublished, to our attention."
