TDK presents a new release with a night of bebop from Cuba with young pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and his trio, continuing its series of excellent jazz concerts from the Munich Piano Festival "Munchner Klaviersommer" on DVD.
Classically-trained Gonzalo Rubalcaba (b. 1963) gives his piano playing an exceptional technique, stringing brilliant runs together with sparkling rhythmic variants. Rubalcaba also has a unique sense of drama, above and beyond his phenomenal technical achievements.
With two Cuban musicians in the group, one might expect hot Latin rhythms; however its repertoire draws mainly on the classic bebop numbers, with occasional excursions into more modern territory. Not until the last piece in the regular programme, do the musicians allow their audience a trip to the Caribbean and even there they are still employing a largely jazz vocabulary.
From its beginnings in 1981, the Munich Piano Festival challenged traditional perspectives on piano music, with composed music next to improvised as well as European, American and African traditions. TDK kept track with the festival’s trends and published regularly its highlights in state-of-the-art recordings on DVD.
