What is absolutely new?
• All archaic language has been removed from the hymn texts.
• Every tune is set so that you can sing it comfortably, without any strain to your voice.

The traditional hymns have not been ‘tinkered with’: they have been scrupulously examined and skilfully and respectfully rephrased.
Modern Language Hymns Old & New does not ask congregations to describe themselves (or others) as ‘mean’, ‘defiled’, ‘a wretch’ or ‘vile’ or women as honorary men and avoids warlike, militaristic or violent language.
It is our hope that many classic hymns that might have fallen into disuse because of their language will now find new life.

Mayhew have also worked closely and warmly with the authors of more modern hymn texts who, with just a few exceptions, agreed to their requests to make amendments. In addition there are a large number of outstanding new hymns.

What has been done to the tunes to make them singable?
Research, and just listening to any congregation, confirms that many hymns, including almost all Christmas carols, are too high for most people, especially older people and men, but also women and children too.

Where necessary we have set a tune in a lower key so that the high notes are not so high.
