One day by the river a young Cossack roamed

For women's choir (SSS) and solo soprano.

This hearty Russian folk song about loneliness and love found is based on a version sung by Olga and Kristina Bashirin in Irkutsk, Russia in July 1993. The English is as close a depiction of the original text as was possible without compromising musicality; the basic sense has been retained.

It would be appropriate to use a Balkan-type vocal production: brighter, louder, and less "refined" than is usually thought of as desirable in Western singers. This vocal style should increase authenticity, and add to young singers' sound palette. Includes both English and Russian text with pronunciation guide for the Russian.
