In the eighties I had the good luck to live in a Polish neighborhood of Toronto, and to work in a kitchen staffed mostly by Poles. The took me to fabulous performances of the song and dance troups Slask and Mazowsze, where I first heard the folk song Dwa Serduszka; this arrangement is my small tribute to that experience.
The language of Dwa Serduszka combines the dialect of mid-Poland with old-fashioned poetic diction; there's been no attempt to replicate this in the English translation. Hap, which is translated as "grab", is onomatopoeic rather than a "real" word, and turns up in children's skipping songs as a command to jump, or move briskly. For women's choir (SSAA).
