Robert Dauber wrote his enchanting ‘Serenade’ in the Theresienstadt ghetto in 1942. Now, it is published for the first time as part of the Terezín Music Memorial Project, 60 years after Dauber died from typhoid (aged 22) in Dachau, March 1945. One of the influences behind the ‘light’ style Dauber preferred was his father, Adolf (Dol) Dauber, who was well-known as composer, arranger and director of the Dol Dauber Salon Orchestra in the 1920s. As a clear departure from the usual shallowness of salon music, Dauber’s ‘Serenade’, with its demanding solo part, can provide a wonderful encore, or a stimulating intermezzo for concert programmes and advanced music-making at home.
