The plot of this dramatic oratorio comes from a tale out of 'Lalla Rookh: An Oriental Romance', Thomas Moore. It concerns the efforts of the Peri (pronounced PEE-ree) to enter into Heaven (the Peri is an ethereal being of Persian folklore, the result of the union of a fallen angel with a mortal, hence barred from Paradise).
