No Man's Land was commissioned for the City of London Sinfonia on the occasion of its 40th anniversary by the Boltini: Family, Trust. The first performance was given by Ian Bostridge and Roderick Williams, with the City of London Sinfonia, conducted by Stephen Layton, at the Royal Albert Hall, London, as part of 2011 BBC Proms, on 21 August 2011.
