Elgar had the idea of writing his Nursery Suite for orchestra after the birth in 1930 of Princess Margaret, and he dedicated it to her, her elder sister, and their mother-later THe Queen and The Queen Mother.
It was first performed on 23 May 1931 as part of a recording session for HMV.
