David Horne's explosive new Double Violin Concerto

(June 2003)

"Horne's concerto is a major, major piece. String ensembles and orchestras should investigate it, and pounce on it hungrily."

So wrote the Glasgow Herald after the premiere of the Double Violin Concerto by the Scottish Ensemble at the St Magnus Festival on 23 June. A second chance to hear this exciting new 20-minute work comes on 6 July at the Cheltenham International Festival of Music, when the Scottish Ensemble again programmes the Horne alongside the Bach Double Violin Concerto. Although the group, led by soloists Clio Gould and Jonathan Morton, perform the work in spectacular fashion without a conductor, it could equally be played by string orchestras with conductor.

"The Scottish Ensemble launched David Horne's hugely impressive, intriguingly Bach-inspired Double Violin Concerto..."
Sunday Times

"An explosive new four-movement piece, full of fire, virtuosity, the pungent assault of fierce rhythmic salvos that buffeted and bruised the imagination, and constant, jolting syncopations that had the senses reeling."
The Herald

"...the piece was brilliantly written for the medium."
Daily Telegraph

David Horne continues his Composer in Association role with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. This has resulted in a series of new works, including the much-admired percussion concerto Ignition for Evelyn Glennie, and the cantata The Year's Midnight setting texts by Donne, Bronte and Shakespeare. A new Concerto for Orchestra has been commissioned for premiere in 2004, and Horne continues his active engagement in education projects within the Liverpool area.

In the USA, Horne's new string quartet Subterfuge continues to be toured extensively by the Brentano Quartet who gave its premiere in October 2002. Performances this year have so far included New York, Houston, Boston and Philadelphia. Plans are underway for international performances of Horne's ensemble arrangements of techno tracks by Warp artists, premiered by the London Sinfonietta as part of the Ether festival in London in March.
