James MacMillan: new choral works now on sale

(December 2010)

A selection of James MacMillan's recent choral music is now available on sale, including the latest Strathclyde Motets and new settings of the Miserere and Jubilate Deo.

In recent years James MacMillan's choral music has been attracting performances both by church choirs and chamber choirs. A selection of new publications is now available ranging from the latest short pieces in the Strathclyde Motets series to larger-scale settings of the Miserere and Jubilate Deo. Forces range from upper voices only, through a cappella SATB, to double choir with organ accompaniment.

The Miserere was commissioned by the Flanders Festival in Antwerp and premiered there in 2009 by The Sixteen conducted by Harry Christophers. The performance was featured in BBC Four TV's recent series Sacred Music, presented by Simon Russell Beale. Miserere received its UK and French premieres last August at the City of London Festival and La Chaise Dieu Festival.

The Jubilate Deo was commissioned by Wells Cathedral to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. It was premiered by the Wells Cathedral Choir conducted by Matthew Owens in May 2009. Wells Cathedral was also the venue for the premiere in 2008 of ...fiat mihi..., a double choir setting combining Stabat Mater passages with texts by the composer, commissioned  by Bath Camerata and conducted by Nigel Perrin.

Plans include the publication of collected editions of the Strathclyde Motets in two volumes, and MacMillan's congregational Mass of Blessed John Henry Newman, premiered at the Papal Mass in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow during Pope Benedict's visit to the UK in September.
