(August 2003)Welsh National Opera joins forces with Classic FM
Three-year duet for classical music leaders
An alliance between Britain’s busiest opera company and the country’s leading commercial radio station hopes to encourage more young people to experience classical music.
Welsh National Opera (WNO) and classical music station Classic FM have come together in a joint bid to bring classical music and opera to young people. The partners will work together over the next three years on a series of educational projects and live performances with the aim of making classical music more accessible to people of all ages.
WNO, which will now style itself ‘Classic FM's opera company throughout the UK’, has been in existence since the 1940s and during that time has enjoyed international success and won many awards. Classic FM was launched in 1992 to become Britain’s first national commercial radio station. It now attracts more than 5mn listeners per week.
