The text for Thank You God consists of prayers that were written by members of the Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus, the organization that commissioned the work. In all, some forty prayers were submitted to the composer for consideration and if there was a single underlying theme found in the children's thoughts, it was one of gratitude and appreciation. The eight prayers that were set to music in the end were chosen more to create a balanced cycle of contrasting perspectives than anything else. In fact many of the prayers that were not set to music could have easily been accorded a place but for the contstraints of time and repetition.
