Based on a text from Psalm 139, Search Me, Lord , a chant-like melody introduces the work, after which a solo tenor intones the essential supplications: "Search me, Lord, and know my heart."  A dramatic recitative forms the central portion of the work, and the music ends quietly, in prayerful resignation.  The simplicity of the music is intended to heighten the heartfelt eloquence of this ancient prayer of David.
