George Gershwin
Porgy and Bess, the much-loved opera by Gershwin, DuBose & Dorothy Heyward, and Ira Gershwin, is available from B&H for concert performance.
Arnold Bax
All seven of Sir Arnold Bax's symphonies are available from Warner/Chappell, forming one of the major cycles by a British 20th century composer, with No.6 established as the most performed and highly regarded. Other masterly orchestral works include Tintagel, combining seascape with Arthurian legend, November Woods and The Garden of Fand.
Eric Coates
Eric Coates was a master of light music whose skills were also employed in the film industry as heard in The Dambusters March. Popular items in the Warner/Chappell hire catalogue include By the Sleepy Lagoon (of Desert Island Discs fame), the Knightsbridge March from the London Suite, and the Three Elizabeths Suite.
Erich Korngold
Erich Korngold grew up as a wunderkind in Vienna, going on to be a major composer of opera, orchestral works and chamber music. A second career in the film industry opened up when he emigrated to America in the 1930s: the Warner/Chappell catalogue includes music composed for The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood.
Frederick Loewe
Frederick (Fritz) Loewe's partnership with playwright and lyricist Alan Jay Lerner was one of the 20th century's great creative double-acts. Lerner & Loewe met in 1942 and by 1947 they had a hit on their hands with the musical Brigadoon, followed by Paint Your Wagon and Camelot. Songs from the shows are available on hire separately or collected into four sequences, and the tunes can also be heard in a range of short orchestral medleys.
John Williams
John Williams is the most famed of all modern composers for film, and the Warner/Chappell collection of his scores is headed by the symphonic suites for Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. Other popular items, much programmed on Music from the Movies programmes, are Superman and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Concert items include the 1984 Olympic Fanfare and Theme and a Tuba Concerto.
Concert Classics
Other popular concert works published by Warner/Chappell include Sir Henry Wood's Fantasia on British Sea Songs, heard every year at the Last Night of the Proms, Waldteufel's Skaters Waltz, Mackerras's arrangement of Sullivan Pineapple Poll, Shostakovich's arrangement of Youmans's Tea for Two, David Fanshawe's African Sanctus, and Danny Elfman's music for Batman and The Simpsons.
