"Music for me is clarification; I try to clarify, to refine, to sensitize... My technique is to tear all the waste away; to achieve perfect clarity of expression, that is my aim." —Benjamin Britten

Britten’s operas form the most substantial and important part of his compositional legacy. Nearly all have firmly established themselves in the repertory and, as a whole, have come to be recognised as one of the most significant contributions to twentieth-century British music.

Published by Boosey & Hawkes up to 1963 and Faber Music after this point, many of Britten's famous operas are available in vocal score format including Midsummer Night's Dream, Peter Grimes, Albert Herring, Rape of Lucretia, The Turn of the Screw and Billy Budd.
