27 July 11.00 am (Dr Who Prom)
Mark-Anthony Turnage
The Torino Scale (UK premiere)

Elliott Carter
Oboe Concerto
Nicholas Daniel/BBC Symphony Orchestra/David Robertson

Elliott Carter wrote his Oboe Concerto in 1987 for Heinz Holliger, and it has been eagerly taken up by soloists around the world. There is a baroque flavour to the work's scoring, with soloist, concertante group and orchestra.

18 August 7.30 pm
Elliott Carter
Soundings (UK premiere)
Nicolas Hodges piano/BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra/Ilan Volkov

Soundings is one of Carter's most recent concerto-style works, and has been performed in the USA, Germany and Austria since its premiere in 2005 by Daniel Barenboim.

22 August 7.00 pm
Schubert arr. Detlev Glanert
Das Lied im Grünen
Angelika Kirchschlager/Gürzenich Orchestra/Markus Stenz

27 August 10.00 pm
Einojuhani Rautavaara
Cantus Arcticus [published by Fennica Gehrman]
London Sinfonietta/David Atherton

Rautavaara's most widely performed work, a "concerto for birds and orchestra", is heard at the Proms in celebration of the composer's 80th birthday. Birdsong recorded on tape combines with delicate chamber orchestra scoring.

30 August 7.30 pm
Magnus Lindberg
Seht die Sonne (UK premiere)
Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra/Jukka-Pekka Saraste

Lindberg's starting point for this richly coloured orchestral work was the sunrise at the end of Schoenberg's Gurrelieder, and the work explores the tipping point from late-Romanticism to modernism.

8 September 7.30 pm
Mark-Anthony Turnage
Chicago Remains (European premiere)
Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Bernard Haitink

Turnage's orchestral work, written for tonight's performers, is a response to Carl Sandburg's Chicago Poems and to the American city's fabled ability to reinvent itself. It was premiered in Chicago last October and the Prom performance is the work's European premiere.
