Head Start on Britten's Centenary: Aspen and Castleton(June 2009)
The newly-formed Castleton Music Festival in Virginia will offer four operas by Benjamin Britten, including a new production of The Turn of the Screw to be performed on July 3-5. Lorin Maazel will lead musicians from the Royal College of Music, London and the performances will take place in the Theatre House at Castleton Farms.
The Castleton Festival, to be inaugurated in July 2009, is an outgrowth of the successful Castleton Residency program established by the Chauteauville Foundation in 2006. It will be the only American festival with chamber opera as its focus, resulting in an all-Britten season this summer, with performances of The Beggar’s Opera, Albert Herring, The Rape of Lucretia, along with The Turn of the Screw.

The Aspen Music Festival, too, shines its spotlight on Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, looking forward to the composer’s centenary in 2013. Under the direction of Edward Berkeley, Jane Glover will conduct the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble in two performances of the chamber opera on July 30 and August 1 at the Wheeler Opera House.
Along with this staple of chamber opera repertoire, David Robertson will conduct the Aspen Concert Orchestra in two additional contemporary works, György Kúrtag’s Stele [EMB] on July 15, a work The Boston Globe has called “a modern masterpiece” and Christopher Rouse’s Oboe Concerto on July 19. The piece had its world premiere on February 5, 2009 with the Minnesota Orchestra and soloist Basil Reeve. This summer Richard Woodhams performs the solo part at the Benedict Music Tent.
