Kalevi Aho: music explored at RNCM festival in Manchester
(January 2008)
Kalevi Aho: Finnish composer at the RNCM26-27 February 2008
Kalevi Aho, one of Finland’s leading composers travels to Manchester for 26-27 February to be the focus of the Royal Northern College of Music’s latest composer feature festival. This two day event, entitled Perpetual Horizons: The Music of Kalevi Aho, will combine the forces of the RNCM and the BBC Philharmonic in a series of concerts and talks. Aho is described as ‘one of Finland’s best-kept musical secrets’ (The Times), and this will be the largest festival of his music ever held in the UK.
Concerts in the festival are to include selections of Aho’s chamber and solo works by RNCM performers, as well as talks and interviews with the composer. The BBC Philharmonic, under conductor James MacMillan, will perform works including the fantasy for orchestra Rejoicing of the Deep Waters and the 10th of his fourteen symphonies. They will also present the Double Cello Concerto, with cellists Frans Helmerson and Li Wei, which, commissioned by the BBC in 2004, was premiered at the RNCM Manchester International Cello Festival and reviewed as “a spectacular triumph… if this piece does not establish itself in the repertoire there is no justice” (Daily Telegraph).
Aho writes of his music: “For me music, at least great music, is a manifestation of emotions and the soul. In music, I hear the speech of one human being to another; I hear his joy, sorrow, happiness, desperation. In a composition as a whole, I hear his attitude to life, his philosophy, his world view — his message.”
