Paquito D'Rivera Wins GRAMMY Award for Funk Tango

Electrifying performer, conductor, composer, and artistic administrator, Paquito D'Rivera has impacted American music across Latin, jazz, and classical genres. Winner of this year's GRAMMY for Best Latin Jazz Album: Funk Tango, the upcoming year promises much to look forward to as Mr. D’Rivera has been named Composer-In-Residence at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, will receive the Frankfurt Music Prize (March, 2008) and an honorary doctor of music degree from the University of Pennsylvania (May, 2008).  With more than 30 recordings to date, Mr. D'Rivera has garnered nine GRAMMY awards, his Merengue for cellist Yo-Yo Ma earning him the GRAMMY for Best Instrumental Composition in 2004. Mr. D’Rivera has been awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition in 2007, named an NEA Jazz Master receiving the 2005 National Medal for the Arts and was twice named Clarinetist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association (2004, 2006).

Funk Tango was performed by the Paquito D'Rivera Quintet and released on his own Sunnyside Records/Paquito Records label. Featuring Paquito D'Rivera on Alto Sax/Clarinet; Diego Urcola on Trumpet/Valve Trombone; Ed Simon, Alon Yavnai, and Fernando Otero on Piano; Oscar Stagnaro on Bass; Mark Walker on Drums; Pernell Saturnino on Percussion; Pablo Stagnaro on- Cajon and Hector del Curto on Bandoneon; Funk Tango is the ensemble’s first self-produced CD. It is currently available through Sunnyside Records and on iTunes.

Three more Boosey & Hawkes composers appear on GRAMMY award-winning albums this year. The Kronos Quartet's recording of Henryk Górecki's  String Quartet No. 3 '... Songs Are Sung', released by Nonesuch Records, won Judith Sherman the GRAMMY for Classical Producer of the Year and is available at Amazon.com. The Moscow Soloists won Best Small Ensemble Performance with their recording of Igor Stravinsky's Apollo and Concerto in D, as well as Sergei Prokofieff's Visions Fugitives, released by Onyx and available through Amazon.com.
