When Eduard Künneke composed "Liselott" Gustav Gründgens visited him, expressing his deep love for singing. Gründgens had written a text for a duett he wished to be set to music. "Wie sind wir beide vornehm" thus became part of the first Singspiel intended to be performed by singing actors rather than professional singers.
