Finzi's Violin Concerto, his earliest extended instrumental work, was composed in 1925-7. Early on it received performances conducted by Sargent and Vaughan Williams, but the composer then set aside the work, subsequently promoting the slow movement separately as the Introit, published for violin and piano in 1935 and for violin and small orchestra in 1943. The concerto was not heard again until Richard Hickox and the City of London Sinfonia performed it in 1999, with Tasmin Little as soloist; the same artists later recorded the work for Chandos. Edited and with preface by Stephen Banfield; solo part edited by Tasmin Little.
