Carter Flute Concerto (UK premiere)

Elliott Carter wrote this concerto in 2008 for leading flautist Emmanuel Pahud, who has performed the work in Jerusalem and Berlin and now brings it to London. Like many of Carter's recent scores, the compact concerto follows a conversational course with lively repartee between soloist and orchestra.

Holloway Fifth Concerto for Orchestra (world premiere)

Robin Holloway's Fifth Concerto for Orchestra, commissioned by the BBC, receives its premiere at the Proms on 4 August. The 25-minute work traverses five movements with distinct colours and moods, combining constructivism with the composer's customary orchestral virtuosity .

Reich Electric Counterpoint / Music for 18 Musicians

This late-night Prom devoted to Steve Reich celebrates the composer's 75th birthday year. The composer will attend the concert including Electric Counterpoint for electric guitarist pitted against multiple alter egos on tape, and the 1970s classic Music for 18 Musicians viewed as one of minimalism's finest achievements.

Birtwistle Angel Fighter (UK premiere)

Harrison Birtwistle's dramatic cantata Angel Fighter retells the Genesis story of Jacob wrestling with the Angel. Scored for chamber chorus, tenor, countertenor and ensemble, the 30-minute work was premiered at the Leipzig Bach Festival last year and receives its UK premiere at Cadogan Hall.

Birtwistle Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (European premiere)

Harrison Birtwistle's new Concerto for Violin and Orchestra was premiered in Boston in March and soloist Christian Tetzlaff brings it to the BBC Proms on 7 September. Cast in a single 25-minute span, the concerto is Birtwistle's first for a stringed instrument. It reinvents the classical concept of dialogue, either between the violinist and the orchestra in a role as 'chorus' or with a sequence of instrumentalists emerging from the tutti.

Last Night of the Proms

As the curtain-raiser to the Last Night festivities, Peter Maxwell Davies has been commissioned by the Musicians Benevolent Fund to create a miniature work for chorus and orchestra. In Musica Benevolens the Master of the Queen's Music pays tribute to the Promenaders' fundraising efforts throughout the season of over 80 concerts.
