Britten in YouTube Symphony Orchestra finale in Sydney

(March 2011)

The YouTube Symphony Orchestra's streamed finale concert from Sydney on 20 March features a complete performance of Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.

Boosey & Hawkes composers feature prominently in the YouTube Symphony Orchestra's Grand Finale concert from the Sydney Opera House on 20 March at 8pm, which will be streamed live via YouTube, the video sharing website owned and operated by Google. Works by Igor Stravinsky, Alberto Ginastera and Richard Strauss are featured together with a complete performance of Benjamin Britten's popular The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, which has introduced generations of young performers and audiences to the sounds of the symphony orchestra. Britten's centenary is celebrated in 2013.

Leading up to the Grand Finale concert, a series of YouTube Symphony Orchestra concerts in Sydney highlighting the instrumental families within the orchestra take place between 15 and 20 March including music by Mark-Anthony Turnage, Paquito D'Rivera, Steve Reich, Christopher Rouse and Igor Stravinsky.

The musicians in the orchestra were selected via a unique online audition process. Applicants could choose either to upload a video of themselves performing a set excerpt on an orchestral instrument or could submit an improvised performance. The applications were then put to the public vote via YouTube.

The YouTube Symphony Orchestra is a global endeavour devoted to sharing the love of music and celebrating humanity's vast creative diversity. Musicians selected to perform in the orchestra have been invited to Sydney where they are working between 15 and 20 March with world-renowned conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and receiving coaching by leading musicians from the world's top orchestras. YouTube is donating all ticket proceeds to digital education initiatives at Sydney Opera House.
