Karl Jenkins: Armed Man now published on sale for all choirs to perform
(October 2002)
The CD success of Karl Jenkins has been extended beyond the best-selling Adiemus series into new territory with the Virgin release of The Armed Man: A Mass of Peace (CDVE 956). Upon its release in September the new disc rose rapidly up the charts reaching No.2 in the overall UK Classical Chart and No.1 in the Amazon Classical Chart. The recording, conducted by the composer, features the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain with soloists including cellist Guy Johnston.
The Armed Man is a powerful and compelling account of the descent into, and terrible consequences of war. Commissioned for the millennium by the Royal Armouries and dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo crisis, this work is a contemporary example of a mass based on the 15th-century French song L’Homme Armé (The Armed Man). The complete work sets sacred and secular texts including Tennyson, Kipling, The Koran and the Hindu Mahàbharàta within the framework of the Christian mass. The press described the Mass as "a firebomb of orchestral and human voices" (The Times) that drew "prolonged shouts of approval from the audience" (The Independent).
A vocal score of The Armed Man is now published for sale by Boosey & Hawkes. The suite of four mass movements and the Hymn Before Action arranged for SATB chorus and piano/organ is suitable as a concert item or within a liturgical setting and will make a stunning contemporary mass alternative. The complete work is also available on hire.
