Leonard Bernstein 90th Anniversary Celebration Begins
(December 2007)As the musical world prepares for the Leonard Bernstein 90th Anniversary Celebration in 2008-2009, a number of exciting concerts are already in the works, commemorating this most iconic of American composers.
Beginning January 10th, the Philadelphia Orchestra will kick off a month-long Bernstein celebration, with Christoff Eschenbach conducting the “Jeremiah” Symphony, and Joshua Bell performing the Songs for Violin and Orchestra from West Side Story under the baton of Rossen Milanov. These and all of the performances on the series will be paired with lectures and discussions aimed at exploring Bernstein’s continuing legacy. In April 2008, New York City Opera will restage Harold Prince’s production of Candide, hailed by The New York Times as “a 14-karat triumph.”
From September 24 2008 to December 13, 2008, Carnegie Hall will present “Bernstein: The Best of All Possible Worlds,” a city-wide festival celebrating Leonard Bernstein. There will be more than 30 events, including concerts, musical theatre, film screenings, and panel discussions. Looking further ahead, Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra will begin their 2009 season with a two-week Bernstein celebration, culminating in performances of his epic Mass.
