John Adams and Anna Clyne Premieres in South America

(July 2014)

John Adams’s Saxophone Concerto to Receive South American Premiere in August

Anna Clyne in Residence at Campos do Jordão Winter Festival

Following international critical acclaim, John Adams’s Saxophone Concerto will see its South American premiere with Marin Alsop and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), joined by soloist Timothy McAllister. Performances take place August 14–16 in São Paulo, Brazil. The Saxophone Concerto has been making its way to listeners in concert performances and through the recently released album from Nonesuch Records, featuring McAllister with the St. Louis Symphony, conducted by David Robertson. The Concerto was co-commissioned by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, part of its 60th anniversary celebration. (Other commissioners include the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.)

Adams’s Saxophone Concerto was recently highlighted on "NPR Music’s 25 Favorite Albums of 2014 (So Far)" along with his City Noir. In reviews of the album, The Times (London) has called it "fun from start to finish," and The New York Times remarks both works are "dense, brash and exuberant."

In addition to the performances of Adams’s Saxophone Concerto, OSESP looks to another Boosey composer, Anna Clyne, as the Campos do Jordão Winter Festival gets underway. Now in its 45th year, Brazil’s most renowned music festival, the Campos do Jordão International Winter Festival, takes place July 5–August 3 up the mountains of São Paulo State. The Festival, supported by OSESP, regularly attracts tens of thousands of audience members to its unique and engaging concerts. The Festival also features international artists who teach classes and give first-hand experience to the next generation of talent.

Multiple works by Anna Clyne—a composer-in-residence at the Festival—have already made appearances on several programs throughout the month-long celebration. Both her Roulette and Shadow of the Words received South American premieres by the Quarteto Radamés Gnattali on July 19. Another program the same day featured Clyne’s Masquerade—another South American premiere—conducted by Marin Alsop, alongside works by Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich performed by the Campos do Jordão Festival Orchestra (with an additional performance July 20), and July 24 sees the South American premiere of Rewind, performed by the University of São Paulo Symphony Orchestra. As part of her duties as a composer-in-residence, Anna Clyne is also teaching a 10-day composition class at the Festival. Earlier this year, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra played her Night Ferry at Sala São Paulo, in a subscription program conducted by Marin Alsop.
