Synopsis

A courtroom is filled by the Clerk, the Police (with Sergeant), the Jury, the Judge and the Prisoner. A later arrival – he has been having a water wave and a set for his wig – is the prosecuting counsel, Mr Postlethwaite. Now the case can begin. PC Bloggs leads off with the evidence against the accused, whom he saw standing next to a man attempting to obtain cigarettes from a vending machine with his hand in the man's pocket. Despite the personableness of the accused, the evidence looks pretty grim. However, he explains that the man at the machine had carelessly dropped a lighted match into his own trouser pocket, and that he – the prisoner – was merely trying to put it out. Unfortunately for the police, it turns out the man at the machine was actually trying to rob it. The case is dismissed, and the Judge impresses upon all that kindness pays.
