London Philharmonic Orchestra
Kurt Masur, conductor
Two works which stand as milestones in what is probably the most important symphonic canon of the 20th century: that of Dimitri Shostakovich. In live recordings Kurt Masur and the London Philharmonic Orchestra survey the First Symphony, which first established the composer as a skilful symphonist, and the Fifth, which confirmed his status as one of the greatest artistic talents of the time.
Shostakovich is repertoire Masur is very at home with, and it regularly features in his programs for the concert hall. Despite his extensive recording discography he has recoded relatively little Shostakovich, the first violin concerto and Symphony No.13 being committed to disc.
