These six French folksong arrangements were commissioned by the soprano Sophie Wyss, and first performed by her with Ernest Lush (piano) in 1957. Vivd, lyrical and delicate, Gerhard's skilfull treatment maintains their traditional appeal whilst raising their level to that of art-song.
