Andrew Hill is a landmark jazz composer and pianist from the legendary Blue Note recording era of the 1960s. Blue Note founder Alfred Lion referred to Hill as "my last great protégé." Discovered in the late 1930s by Earl "Fatha" Hines, Hill has left a voluminous and highly varied recorded legacy, dating from the 1950s (So In Love) to his 2006 trio album Time Lines (Blue Note), named to many critics' top ten lists.

Andrew Hill was voted Jazz Composer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association five times, most recently in 2007; he received the 2003 JazzPar Award, was inducted into the Downbeat Hall of Fame, and was one of the first to receive a Doris Duke Foundation Award for jazz composers. Also, Hill received an honorary doctorate of music degree from Berklee College of Music; other honorees “for their achievements in the world of music, and for their enduring contributions to American and international culture" at Berklee’s special 2007 commencement award ceremony included Gloria and Emilio Estefan, and The Edge; this distinction has previously been extended to Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Quincy Jones and Ahmet Ertegun, among a few others. Andrew Hill’s recordings have been on Blue Note, Mosaic, Palmetto, Black Saint/Soul Note, SteepleChase, East West/Test of Time, among other labels.

On April 3, 2007, just prior to his untimely passing, Boosey & Hawkes announced the addition of Andrew Hill “to its distinguished roster of composers.” Hill joined the ranks of such lauded composers as Stravinsky, Copland, and Elliott Carter, as well as jazz luminaries Wynton Marsalis and Charles Mingus.

15/8, by award-wining filmmaker Markie Hancock, explores one composition, one rehearsal, and one performance of Andrew Hill's complex and alluring piece entitled 15/8. The recording on which 15/8 is featured, “Dusk” (Palmetto Records, 2001), won Downbeat Album of the Year.
