MacMillan wins Classical Brit for Symphony No.3

(May 2006)

James MacMillan has won a Classical Brit Award in the Contemporary Music category for the Chandos recording of his Symphony No.3: 'Silence' and The Confession of Isobel Gowdie.

James MacMillan received his Classical Brit Award at the 2006 ceremony on 7 May at London's Royal Albert Hall, saying, "I'd like to make a special thank you to Ralph Couzens who, along with his father, has been responsible for one of the most precious jewels in British classical music, Chandos Records. I also think that an award like this, where the work of a living composer is celebrated at such an event, sends a very clear signal to the world of classical music and beyond, that classical music is a living culture as well as a museum culture and I think that is very important and always has been, and if that can encourage younger composers to continue and write and be creative, I'd be delighted."

Ralph Couzens, MD of Chandos Records, comments, "It is heartening that the talent of one of today's finest young composers and an independent record label are recognised and rewarded alongside all the razzmatazz and superstars at the Classical Brits. Chandos is proud to be associated with James MacMillan and the BBC Philharmonic. The award shows that there is real potential in the future of the Classical industry".

The Third Symphony, performed on the Chandos disc (CHAN 10275) by the BBC Philharmonic conducted by MacMillan, takes its title from the novel of the same name by one of Japan's most famous writers, Shusaku Endo. In the novel, Endo tries to make sense of God's apparent silence when confronted with the appalling crimes of humanity; MacMillan, in his extraordinary score, not only explores the spiritual meaning of this apparent silence of God, but also the relationship between music and silence - itself a fascinating subject.

The Classical Brit Awards were established in 2000 to recognise the outstanding recording achievements of classical musicians and the success of classical music sales in the UK.

The next in Chandos's series of MacMillan CDs is a June release with premiere recordings of A Scotch Bestiary and Piano Concerto No.2 with Wayne Marshall as both organ and piano soloist, the BBC Philharmonic, and MacMillan as conductor (CHAN 10377).
