In the work's original setting, the solo instrument is accompanied by a (string) orchestra. As a conductor in Stuttgart, Donaueschingen and Vienna, Kreutzer was able to draw on a number of good ensembles for his performances. Since there was no edition for clarinet and piano, John Newhill has come to the aid of performers by remedying this omission.
