"Night and Day", the new programme from Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson, contains 24 songs from 24 different composers for the 24 hours of the day. . This has to be understood metaphorically. Not every hour has to be allocated a particular song. The poetry and the workings of the clock maintain a perfectly ironic relationship with each other. Two of the hours, though, enjoy a privileged position because of fixed astronomic and astrological constellations: midday and midnight. In England, the five o'clock tea, to which Oscar Straus' hit Warum soll eine Frau kein Verhältnis haben? is dedicated in this programme, is added to these for social reasons. Overall, the programme follows the course of the day from daybreak to daybreak - but in an approximate, poetic style.

Dame Felicity Lott was born in Cheltenham in 1947. After studying French at the Royal Holloway College, she trained as a singer under Flora Nielsen. She began singing parts such as Rosmena in Handel's Imeneo, Pamina and Dorabella in college productions at the Royal Academy of Music in London. After further Handel and Mozart performances in Abingdon and Leicester, she made her breakthrough in 1976 as Pamina at the English National Opera. In 1976 she made her debut in the premiere of Hans Werner Henze's We Come to the River at Covent Garden and as Madeleine in Richard Strauss' Capriccio at the Glyndbourne Touring Opera. These four pillars of her operatic repertoire - baroque music, Mozart, Strauss, restrained modern music - were soon joined by French performances (Charpentiers Louise, Blanche in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmelites, La voix humaine) and operettas (Die lustige Witwe, Fledermaus, La Belle Helene). Dame Felicity has sung on all of the world's major stages and will be performing at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in April.
