Wayland Rogers - As Lately We Watched  

  
This 18th century Austrian carol depicts an imaginary scene of young shepherds preparing to visit the newborn Christ-child.  The English text differs significantly from the German text.  Whereas the former depicts an assemblage of respectful and reverent shepherds, the latter presents a bunch of rustic peasants.  The text in Austrian dialect pictures a leader trying his best to rouse the drowsy shepherds from their sleep and set them to their tasks.  They must start roasting a lamb, don their finest clothes, and practice how they must bow before the Holy Infant when they arrive in Bethlehem.
