La Flute de Pan, known universally as Syrinx, is one of Debussy's most renowned pieces, and is an essential part in the Flautists repertoire. This definitive edition restores Debussy's intentions, and sets the piece in it's theatrical context.
The piece was written at the request of the playwright Gabriel Mourey as incidental music to his play Psych, and was first performed in paris on 1 December 1913. Though this short masterpiece reflects the delightful lines of mourey, it is also a lament, for pan will play no more; through his syrinx.
