Setting a text by David Warner on the parable of The Prodigal Son from St Luke's Gospel, this large-scale choral work is something of a stylistic departure for Mack Wilberg. With echoes of Arvo Pärt, Vaughan Williams, and Walton, the music is both dramatic and expressive, bringing to life the ancient story with punchy rhythms, joyous choruses, and a transcendent coda, which fades away into distant 'Amen's. The SATB choir acts as narrator, as well as giving voice to the characters of the father and brothers, and the chorus is underpinned throughout by the organ or orchestra.
