Hans Pfiztner: the song collection

Hans Pfiztner: the song collection
Schott's complete edition of Pfiztner's vocal works, plus a 5-CD box set from CPO.

The oeuvre of Hans Erich Pfitzner (1869-1949) covers all musical genres, from songs and choral works to chamber music and compositions for orchestra. However, although the main emphasis of his work lies on the music drama (he composed five works for the musical theatre: Der arme Heinrich, Die Rose vom Liebesgarten, Das Christelflein, Palestrina and Das Herz -with Palestrina generally regarded as his magnum opus), Pfitzner’s talent “clearly lay in the vocal realm, and his extraordinary collection of songs offers further evidence of his rare gifts in that genre; if his earliest efforts are not quite on the inspired level of the later songs…the music is mesmerizing in its mystery and brewing tension.” (Robert Cummings)

Although not as famous and still less frequently performed as his contemporaries Hugo Wolf, Gustav Mahler, and Richard Strauss, Pfitzner’s collection of 115 songs is today receiving the musical and critical attention it clearly deserves.

Both complete volumes of Pfitzner’s published songs, along with a 5-CD box set, are now available on our Boosey & Hawkes online shop.
